Greater Manchester is the largest city region economy outside London, and its small business base is far more mixed than the tech-hub headline suggests. Research and development claims from local SMEs fall into three roughly equal blocks: information and communication, manufacturing, and professional, scientific and technical work. Manufacturing in particular is a live SME sector here rather than a heritage story, with close to a thousand small manufacturers across the North West having taken support through the Made Smarter digitalisation programme. Creative, digital and media businesses employ tens of thousands more. It is a region full of firms that quote, specify, schedule and chase, which is precisely the work this system was built around.
The appetite is documented rather than assumed. The Greater Manchester AI Foundry, run jointly by Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Manchester, the University of Salford and Lancaster University, exists to get SMEs into AI across advanced manufacturing, clean growth, digital and creative media, and health innovation. The IT services firm ANS has committed three million pounds towards helping organisations here assess their AI readiness. What none of those programmes will do is go inside one firm and rebuild how it quotes. Azgard does only that. - What hours do we actually work in, with you based in Sydney?
- Your morning, and only your morning. Sydney sits nine to eleven hours ahead depending on the season, so a nine or ten o'clock start in Manchester lands in Sydney's evening, and that is the window live sessions get booked into. By your lunchtime the overlap has gone for the day. Everything outside it runs in writing and inside your own files, so the build carries on while you sleep instead of stalling until the next call.
- We run a small manufacturing business. Where does this actually pay off?
- In the quoting and the paperwork wrapped around a job, rather than on the shop floor. Firms that have already been through a digitalisation programme often have decent machine data and still lose a day a week to writing quotes, chasing drawings, rewriting work instructions and answering the same customer questions by hand. Those are information problems and they respond well. If your real bottleneck is a machine or a labour shortage, AI will not shift it, and that gets said in the first session rather than the last.
- Does Greater Manchester mean the city, or the wider region?
- The wider region, and it makes no practical difference to delivery anyway. Stockport, Bolton, Salford, Oldham or a unit off the M60 all get the same engagement, because it runs on video and inside systems you already own. Azgard is not local to any of it. There is no Manchester office and no pretence of one, which is worth knowing before you compare quotes with a firm down the road.
- Is it worth paying for this when there are funded AI programmes locally?
- Often you should do the funded thing first. The AI Foundry and the region's other support schemes cost you nothing and will teach your team what these tools can genuinely do, which is real value. Paying somebody starts to make sense once you already know what you want and nobody in the business has the time or the engineering skill to build it: when quoting depends on one person's memory, or a good process exists only as habit. If you are still at the what-is-all-this stage, take the free option and come back afterwards.
- Do we need somebody technical in the business for this to work?
- No, but you do need the person who actually knows how the work gets done, and you need them in the room rather than copied into the notes. The sessions are done-with-you on purpose. A system built from a manager's description of the process, instead of from the estimator who really does it, is a system the estimator quietly works around. The technical half is Azgard's problem. The knowing-how-your-business-runs half cannot be outsourced to anyone.
