Vancouver's job market is service work and retail more than anything made in a factory. Professional and commercial services together with retail trade account for about half of all jobs in the city, and professional, scientific and technical services have grown roughly a quarter over the past decade, faster than any other major category, while manufacturing, warehousing and resource industries have shrunk as a share of city employment. The firms doing that work are small. On the North Shore, where the chamber of commerce counts them, close to seven in ten businesses have fewer than four people and about ninety eight per cent have under fifty. Metro Vancouver is the phrase businesses use for the region, Lower Mainland for the wider area, and both matter more than the city boundary does.
The Greater Vancouver Board of Trade put a number on the hesitation. In its agenda for accelerating AI adoption in British Columbia, sixty eight per cent of BC businesses had not yet considered using AI, and of those not using it, sixty nine per cent said they could not identify a clear business case. That second figure is the honest one. Most owners here are not against the technology, they simply cannot see where it touches their week. So the work starts from the week rather than the technology: read how the quoting, the client follow-up and the reporting actually happen, name the two or three places where a system would take real hours out, and build only those, inside the tools you already pay for.

- How bad is the time difference with Sydney from the West Coast?
- Better than anywhere else in Canada, though the Sydney end is still an early start. Sydney runs seventeen to nineteen hours ahead of Pacific time depending on the season, so one or two in the afternoon here is six to nine the next morning there. Your side of the call sits in a normal working afternoon, which the Toronto and Ottawa pages cannot honestly claim: their equivalent slot is four o'clock or later. Between sessions everything moves in writing and inside your own accounts, so nothing sits waiting for the overlap.
- We cannot identify a clear business case for AI. Is that a reason not to bother?
- It is the most common answer BC businesses give, and it is a fair one. A business case does not arrive from reading about the technology, it arrives from looking at where the hours actually go. The Fundamentals session exists for that: two hours to work out whether anything in your operation is the sort of problem these tools are good at. Sometimes the answer is that it is not, or not yet, and that gets said plainly. Paying for a build before you can name the problem is how businesses end up with software nobody opens.
- We are five people. Is a consultant worth it at our size?
- Sometimes not, and there is a test for it. If what eats your week is repetitive information handling, writing similar quotes, answering similar questions, moving the same details between systems, then being small is an advantage: there is less to change and one person can decide. If the bottleneck is that you need another pair of hands on a job site, or simply more customers, a consultant of any kind is the wrong purchase. Five people with a real process and too much admin is a good fit. Five people still working out what the business does is not.
- Does this cover Surrey, Burnaby and the rest of the region?
- Metro Vancouver is one market as far as this work goes, and so is most of the Lower Mainland. Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond, Coquitlam or the North Shore all get the same engagement, since it runs on video and inside accounts you already hold. What none of them get is a site visit. Azgard is in Sydney, there is no local office, and that belongs on this page rather than in a conversation three weeks in.
- We are in film and creative production. Does this suit us?
- Partly, and it is worth being specific about which part. The creative work itself, and the craft of putting a production together, is not what these systems are good at. The business wrapped around it usually is: quoting, rate cards, contract terms, budget reconciliation, and the client reporting that eats a producer's evenings. If the pitch you have been given is that AI will make the creative output, this is not that, and Vancouver has no shortage of vendors happy to sell it to you.
