the toronto picture.
Toronto's small business economy is not the bank towers. Professional and business services is the largest employment cluster, but trade and transportation runs second, and the Greater Toronto Area is the country's biggest goods distribution market: wholesalers, importers, freight and the warehousing that feeds them, most of it out in the 905 rather than the 416. Add the aerospace and automotive supply chains around the region's manufacturers and you have a metro full of firms that live on quotes, part numbers, lead times and paperwork. Businesses here say GTA more often than Toronto, and the difference between a 416 and a 905 number is genuine local shorthand for which half of that economy you sit in.
The gap is measurable. Statistics Canada put AI use in wholesale trade at 7.9 per cent in mid 2026, the second lowest of any sector, against 19.2 per cent across all businesses. Toronto is better placed to close it than most places: the Toronto Region Board of Trade runs an AI Business Catalyst funded by FedDev Ontario, taking up to seventy five southern Ontario businesses through readiness assessments, workshops and a six month program for owners. What a program cannot do is open your price list, your past quotes and your supplier emails and build the thing that uses them. That is the only part Azgard does, remotely from Sydney, handed over documented so your own people can change it later without calling anyone.

common questions
asked from toronto.
- What time do sessions run if we are on Eastern time?
- Sydney is fourteen to sixteen hours ahead of Toronto depending on where both countries sit in their daylight saving cycles. Four in the afternoon here is between six and eight the next morning there, so that is where live sessions get booked. It is the end of your day, which for most owners is the first quiet part of it. Anything outside that window moves in writing, and recordings and notes go to whoever could not make the call.
- We are a wholesaler. What does AI actually do in a distribution business?
- Quoting and product knowledge first. Most distributors lose real hours to working out what a customer bought last time, checking which supplier price is current, and answering the same specification question in a slightly different email. A system holding your catalogue, your pricing history and your past orders answers those in seconds and drafts the reply for someone to send. Stock forecasting sounds like the obvious target and usually is not: it needs clean data first, and saying so early is part of the job.
- Do you work with businesses out in the 905, or only downtown?
- The whole GTA, and the distinction stops mattering the moment delivery comes from Sydney. Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Vaughan or a unit off the 401 get exactly the same engagement as a Bay Street office, because it runs on video and inside systems you already own. There is no Toronto office behind this page and no pretence of one, which is worth knowing before you compare it against a firm across town.
- We are already in the Board of Trade's AI program. Is there any point in this as well?
- Usually yes, and in that order. The AI Business Catalyst will teach your leadership what these tools do and help you work out roughly where they fit, which is genuinely useful and costs a fraction of what a build does. Come back at the point where you can name the specific thing you want in one sentence and nobody in the business has the time or the engineering skill to make it. If you cannot name it yet, you are not ready to pay anyone for it, including Azgard.
- Our records are a mess. Do we need to clean them up first?
- No, and waiting until they are tidy is how this gets postponed for two years. The first working sessions go through what you actually have: quotes in one folder, prices in a spreadsheet, half the decisions buried in email. The system gets built around that reality rather than an idealised version of it. Where something genuinely cannot be used, you get told which part to fix and why, not a bill for tidying it up.
