Calgary has the largest share of engineers in its workforce of any city in Canada, and it shows in how businesses here talk: precisely, in scopes and specifications. Professional, scientific and technical services is one of the biggest employment blocks, sitting alongside trade, transportation and a construction sector that has been among the steadier sources of recent job growth. The diversification away from a single industry is real and it is not only tech: advanced manufacturing, aerospace and agribusiness all sit inside it. The local vocabulary is worth getting right too. A sub trade is a specialty contractor working under a general contractor rather than for the owner, defined that way in Alberta's standard tender documents, and whether a business runs as a registered trade name or an incorporated company is a question everyone here answers without thinking about it.

Those are exactly the businesses AI has reached last. Statistics Canada put construction at 9.2 per cent for AI use in mid 2026 against 19.2 per cent across all sectors, and no amount of engineering talent in the city changes what happens inside a twelve person mechanical contractor: quoting runs on one estimator's memory, the scope gets rewritten from scratch every tender, and the closeout paperwork lands on whoever is least busy. Calgary is well served by local AI consultants, several of whom target trades and professional practices directly. What Azgard adds is a method rather than proximity: read the real tenders and job files first, build one working system inside the software you already run, document it, hand it over.

common questions

asked from calgary.

We are on Mountain time. When do the sessions actually happen?
Early to mid afternoon, your time. Sydney sits sixteen to eighteen hours ahead of Calgary depending on the season, so two or three o'clock here is between six and nine the next morning there. That is deliberately after the morning, when a contractor's day is least likely to get interrupted. Everything between sessions happens in writing and inside your own systems, so the build carries on while Calgary sleeps rather than stalling until the next call.
We are a sub trade. Where would this actually save us time?
Tendering and closeout, in that order. Most sub trades rebuild the same scope language, the same exclusions and the same pricing logic for every bid, then lose a second block of hours at the end assembling as-builts, warranties and manuals. Both are information problems: the content already exists across old bids and finished jobs, it is just nowhere a person can get at it quickly. Site productivity is not on that list, and anyone promising it to you from a laptop in another country is selling something.
Our revenue moves with the energy cycle. Is this the wrong time to spend on it?
Depends which way it is moving. A busy stretch is the wrong time to start a build and the right time to book the Fundamentals session, because that is two hours rather than a project. A slow stretch is when this work pays best: the hours to sit with your own process exist, and what comes out of it is fixed cost taken out rather than headcount added when the next upswing arrives. What does not work is starting a build in the middle of a scramble and expecting your estimator to be free for any of it.
There are AI consultants here in Calgary. Why hire someone in Sydney?
Only for the right reasons. A local consultant can sit in your boardroom, meet your foremen and be reached at four in the afternoon, and for plenty of businesses that is worth more than anything on this page. Hire one. Azgard is worth considering when the thing you want is genuinely engineering work, when you want one named person building it rather than a team you never meet, and when you want to own the result outright instead of renting it. Compare on what you hold at the end, not on who is closest to your office.
What do you need from us to get started?
Access, an hour of the right person's attention at a time, and honesty about what is broken. The right person is the estimator or the coordinator who actually does the work, not the manager who can describe it, because a system built from a description is one the estimator quietly works around. On the technical side you need nobody. That half is Azgard's problem, and if your current systems cannot support what you are asking for, you get told that early rather than after the invoice.
