~/ai-consultant/nz/wellington · azgard where you are

ai consultant in wellington.

Azgard is a remote AI consultant for businesses across the Wellington region, run by one engineer in Sydney. This is a services economy almost all the way down, which is the kind of work these systems are actually good at.

the local picture

the wellington picture.

The Wellington region is the most services-weighted economy in the country: around seventy two per cent of its industry sits in services against a little over twelve per cent in goods production. Financial and insurance services, information media and telecommunications, legal work, screen and creative production, science and health all cluster here, and public administration sits behind a good deal of it, either as the employer or as the client on the other side of the contract. The regional economic development plan names screen, creative and digital work alongside science, technology and high-value manufacturing as priority growth areas, with a stated goal of thirty thousand new technology jobs by 2035. The wider region is less uniform than the city suggests: the Hutt Valley is a specialty manufacturing and distribution base, and the Wairarapa runs on sheep, dairy and a growing wine industry.

For a firm whose product is advice, analysis, documents and time, the useful question is not whether AI applies. It is where it applies without putting anything at risk. The big consultancies serve the enterprise end of that question here, and serve it well, at enterprise scale and enterprise pricing. The gap sits underneath them: the eight-person practice, the specialist agency, the consultancy that bills by the hour and loses evenings to reporting. Work at that size starts with material carrying no client risk at all, meaning internal process, precedent, templates and research, and only then moves toward anything sensitive, designed around the obligations you already carry rather than around what is technically possible. Everything lands in accounts your firm controls, documented well enough that whoever looks after your systems can maintain it without a retainer.

common questions

asked from wellington.

What hours do sessions actually run, with you in Sydney?
Ordinary ones. Wellington is two hours ahead of Sydney for practically the whole year, so a nine o'clock start here is seven in Sydney and anything from mid-morning onward is comfortable at both ends. No early call, no late call, and no waiting a day for an answer. Of the countries on this site, New Zealand is the only one where the schedule genuinely does not need discussing.
Most of our work is for government agencies. Does that rule this out?
Not by itself, though it changes the order of things. Public sector clients increasingly ask suppliers what AI they use and how, and some contracts carry conditions on where information may be processed. The safe starting point is your own internal material rather than anything belonging to an agency: templates, process, precedent, bid libraries, the reporting your people rebuild every quarter. Anything touching agency information gets designed around the terms you have already signed, with whoever handles your compliance reading the design before it is built. What Azgard will not do is interpret those terms for you. Read them with your own advisers, and treat any consultant who waves that question away as a risk in themselves.
The big consulting firms all run AI practices here. How is this different?
Different size of problem, different size of bill, and a different thing at the end of it. Those firms are built for organisations with change programmes, procurement processes and somebody whose full-time job is transformation. If that describes you, use them. Azgard is one engineer working with businesses that have none of those, where the person deciding is also the person doing the work. The engagement is measured in weeks rather than quarters, the output is a running system rather than a target operating model, and the person on the first call is the person writing the code on the last one.
We bill by the hour. Does making our people faster just cost us revenue?
It is the right question to ask before spending anything, and the answer depends on which hours get shorter. If the time saved is billable time, you have paid for a discount to your clients. If it is the unbillable half, meaning file notes, internal reporting, proposal assembly, scheduling and the summary nobody pays for, then the same team bills more without working longer. That is where the work concentrates in practice. Firms on fixed-fee or retainer arrangements have it easier again, since the saving lands straight in the margin. If the honest answer for your practice is that almost everything is billable and the admin is already thin, that gets said out loud and the engagement is a small one.
Does this cover the Hutt, Porirua, Kāpiti and the Wairarapa?
The whole region, on identical terms. Lower Hutt manufacturers, Porirua service businesses, a Kāpiti practice or a Wairarapa vineyard all receive the same delivery, because it happens on video and inside systems you already own. Nobody gets a site visit, in the city or anywhere else in the region. There is no local office, and no travel budget pretending to be one.
