Canterbury is the largest agricultural region in New Zealand by GDP, producing about a fifth of the country's total agricultural output and employing roughly twenty thousand people directly on the land. Manufacturing is the other engine and the bigger employer of the two, with something over thirty six thousand jobs, close to twelve per cent of the region's total, and food and beverage production the largest slice of it. Canterbury posted the strongest manufacturing performance of any New Zealand region on the national index in early 2025, its best reading in several years. On top of those two, Christchurch has built a genuinely diversified base of hi-tech, aerospace and health businesses, most of them small, and most of them still run by the people who started them.

Local confidence reflects that. A Business Canterbury survey found seventy three per cent of Christchurch businesses expecting the regional economy to strengthen within the year and sixty six per cent expecting their own performance to improve, with investment intentions strongest in the primary sector at eighty per cent and in software and technology at sixty nine per cent. Confidence is not the same thing as a plan, though, and the businesses that spend well in a year like that are the ones who can already name what they want fixed. So the first job here is not a technology decision. It is an honest look at where the week goes: quoting, scheduling, compliance paperwork, chasing suppliers, answering the same customer questions in slightly different words. Two or three of those will have real hours in them, and those are the ones that get built, inside software you already pay for.

common questions

asked from christchurch.

Does the Australian time difference make this awkward?
Not in this direction. Christchurch is two hours ahead of Sydney effectively year-round, so an eight o'clock start here is six in Sydney and everything from mid-morning on is straightforward at both ends. In the other markets on this site, sessions have to be squeezed into a narrow window at one end of somebody's day. Here they run when your team is free, which is most of the reason New Zealand is the simplest place Azgard delivers to.
We are a farming operation. What would this actually touch?
The office, not the paddock. What responds well here is the written and repetitive side of a farming business: compliance and environmental records, supplier and input pricing that gets compared every season, staff and contractor scheduling through the peaks, correspondence with processors and banks, and the reporting that gets rebuilt from scratch each year. What it does not do is run your irrigation, read your soil or replace an agronomist. Precision agriculture is a real field with real equipment behind it, and it is a different purchase from this one.
We run a plant. Is this about the factory floor?
No, and that is worth being blunt about before anyone spends money. Machinery, line automation and process control are engineering problems with specialist suppliers who understand them far better than a software consultant does. This work sits in the building around the floor: estimating that depends on one person's memory of the last similar job, purchase orders and supplier correspondence, specification and certification documents, and the production changes that never quite make it back to whoever is answering the phone. That material is written down, or should be, which is exactly what makes it tractable.
Confidence is up here and other firms are investing. Is that a reason for us to?
On its own, no. Peer investment is a weak argument for spending, and a fair number of the businesses in those survey results will buy something they never open again. The better reason is specific and internal: you can name a task that repeats every week, it costs real hours, it runs on written information, and nobody in the business has the time or the skill to fix it properly. If you can say that in one sentence, the timing is right whether or not anyone else in Canterbury is spending. If you cannot, a confident quarter is precisely when businesses buy software that ends up unused.
Do you cover Canterbury outside Christchurch, and would you ever come down?
Everywhere from Kaikōura to Timaru and inland to the Mackenzie receives the same delivery, because it runs on video and inside your own accounts. What nobody receives is a visit. There is no Christchurch office, no South Island office, and no travel arrangement dressed up as one. If having a consultant physically on your site matters, and for some operations it genuinely does, hire in the region and treat that as a good enough reason on its own.
